Soil properties controlling heavy metal transfer to plants - a case study
Original language description
Transfer of heavy metals from polluted soils to plants and consequent potential input to food chain or to other components of the environment represent an actual danger. The transfer rate depends mainly on the metal content and form in soil, its mobilityand bioavailability. These properties are controlled, beside the chemical properties of the metal, by soil characteristics, especially soil pH, humus content and quality, and clay content. Litavka River alluvium represents an area with extreme levels ofpollution originating from several sources (Borůvka et al., 1996). The aim of this contribution is to assess the influence of level of soil pollution and soil properties on the transfer of Cd, Pb and Zn to spontaneously grown plants. Soil (Fluvisol) sa mples were collected from the topsoil (0-15 cm) on 72 sites in the alluvium of the Litavka River, from sites with different sources and levels of pollution. The samples were air dried and sieved through a 2-mm mesh. Soil pH in 1 M KCl extr
