Construction of transgenic plants with improved uptake of heavy metals
Original language description
Transgenic plants have been prepared specially for tailored for phytoremediation purposes. In the case of heavy metals the main requirement is high accumulation in plants, especially in the harvestable portion. The results show that substantial increaseof cadmium accumulation could be achieved by introducing the additional metal binding domain, a polyhistidine, to the metal binding protein, yeast metallothionein. The other very important fact is that most of the accumulated metal is stored in the leaves, while the cadmium content in roots is lowered comparing to the control plants.
