Germination, emergence and dormancy of Galinsoga ciliata Blake
Original language description
Laboratory experiments were carried out with seeds of G. ciliata in 1998 - 2001. Influence of light, temperature, and temperature fluctuation on germination was studied. The highest germination was obtained at a 14-hours-light period, and permanent temperature between 14 - 26 oC. G. ciliata seeds did not germinate at temperatures below 10 oC. Darkness during germination inhibited germination notably. Germination was positively affected by temperature fluctuation ranging from 10 to 30 oC. Dormancy duration of G. ciliata seeds collected after harvest in July, August, September and October was also studied. Seeds collected in July had the longest dormancy while those collected in September and October showed the shortest one. Under laboratory conditions, experiments were carried out to study emergence of seeds from different soil depths. The highest emergence had the seeds from the top on the soil. Seed from a depth of 2 cm did not emerge
