Ten broiler chickens were housed individually and fed a concentrate feed containing wheat, maize and soybean meal. In the 3rd week of life, faecal output of ingested total and phytate phosphorus (P), and total N was estimated. Phytate P in the feed and faeces was determined using a capillary isotachophoretic method. Phytate P represented 30,1% of the total P in the feed. Chicken excreta contained 5,9#1,5, 8,2#1,1 and 59,5#6,3g of phytate P, total P and total N per kg of dry matter, respectively. On average, 80,6% of the ingested phytate P, 40,4% of total P and 26,7% of total N were recovered in the faeces. Our data confirm low digestibility of phytate P in chickens. The capillary isotachoporetic method is a valuable tool for studies on P metabolism inpoultry.
