Finding of Triploid Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1780) (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae) in Turkey

  • Original language description

Two females of Carassius gibelio were collected 5.3.2002 on the central fish market in Istanbul. These specimens originated from the Kayalıköy dam near the city of Kırklareli in Turkish Thrace. The ploidy level of the fish was estimated by computer-assisted image analyses of erythrocyte nuclear size. The mean nuclear area of 100 measured cells was 19.85 ? 2.00 μm2 and 18.27 ? 1.64 μm2 respectively, therefore both females were triploids. Since C. gibelio is known to be a hazardous fish species for native fish communities, the spread of this species should be dammed.
