Evaluation of chlorophyll meter use for optimisation of sugar beet nitrogen fertilizing

  • Original language description

The aim of our work is to determine if it is possible to use changes in chlorophyll content (SPAD values measured by chlorophyll meter SPAD-502) for sugarbeet plants? nutrient state evaluation and for optimisation of nitrogen fertilizing. We have determined a positive correlation between nitrogen fertiliser rate and SPAD values in all growth stages. The strongest correlations between SPAD values and nitrogen concentration in dry leaf blades were found in plants with 8-15 true leaves (r2 = 0,77++ a 0,59+). The results from small-plot trial were verified by plants with 4-8 true leaves grown under agricultural field conditions, but we did not confirm the correlation between SPAD values and nitrogen concentration in leaves during any of the years. These results mean that chlorophyllmeter SPAD-502 is not accurate enough for sugar beet nutrient state determination in early growth stage (4-8 true leaves) and for nitrogen rate optimisation for additional fertilizing under agricultural field co
