Setting arable land aside by temporary grassland

  • Original language description

A field experiment with four grass species, five legumes and four legume-grass mixtures was established in Prague. The stands were cut once or three times per year or mulched once or twice per year. Arrhenatherum elatius, Medicago media, Coronilla variaand the mixtures with them produced the highest dry mass yields, they were most competitive and persistent. The number of species was in a positive correlation with the harvest frequency. The coverage of grasses and legume-grass mixtures was higher in comparison with the monocultures of legumes. The NO3-N concentration was lowest in grass stands harvested once per year.
