Setting arable land aside by temporary grassing.

  • Original language description

In 1996 a field experiment with four grass species, five legumes and four legume-grass mixtures sown to rows 125 mm was established in Prague (chernozem, altitude 281 m a.s.l., average annual precipitation 472 mm, average annual temperature 9.3° C). Thestands were cut with biomass removal once or three times per year, or mulched once or twice per year. The last harvest, or the only one, was always carried out at the end of vegetation period. The aim was to evaluate the suitability of the species underdifferent management systems for setting arable land aside. Arrhenatherum elatius, Medicago media, Coronilla varia and the mixtures with them produced the highest dry mass yields, these species were most competitive against weeds and most persistent. Thenumber of species was in a positive correlation with the harvest frequency. The coverage of grasses and legume-grass mixtures was higher at the end of vegetation in comparison with the monocultures of legumes. The NO3-N concentration was
