Different utilization of glukose and rafinose in Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium animalis.

  • Original language description

Two strains of Bifidobacterium breve and 4 strains of Bifidobacterium animalis were investigated for their growth parameters with glucose, raffinose or a mixture of glucose and raffinose. The dual-substrate utilization pattern in both cultures growing onthe mixture of glucose and raffinose was also investigated. All strains of Bifidobacterium animalis and one strain of Bifidobacterium breve grew significantly (P < 0.05) more slowly on glucose compared to raffinose and mixture of glucose and raffinose. One strain of B. breve grew significantly more rapidly (P < 0.05) on the mixture of glucose and raffinose compared to raffinose, while two strains of B. animalis grew significantly faster on raffinose than on the mixture of raffinose and glucose. B. breve utilized glucose and raffinose simultaneously. On the contrary, B. animalis strains displayed atypical growth curve in which rapid utilization of raffinose was followed by slow utilization of glucose. All strains of B. animalis showed v
