  • Original language description

Both species recorded in Podyjí NP, the common X. ater and somewhat rarer X. kowarzi, were also found in the Pálava Biosphere Reserve (ROZKOŠNÝ & SPITZER 1998), but only X. ater is listed from the industrially affected landscape in NW Bohemia (ROZKOŠNÝ &BARTÁK 2000). A rich array of localities proves that X. ater occurs virtually anywhere where at least groups of elder deciduous trees or stumps are present and it is especially common in forests and their edges. Xylophagus kowarzi has practically the same ecological requirements, though it distinctly prefers more extensive deciduous forests and also penetrates into forest-steppes.
