  • Original language description

A medium sized family of lower Brachycera with about 450 European species (Chvála 2007); 160 of them are known from Slovakia (Chvála 2006). Adults are small to medium-sized, ranging from 1 to 6 mm in European species, most are predators, only a few species are nectar feeders. Larvae live in soil, litter, decaying wood, in excrements or under decaying organic materials where they are also 127 predators. Many species of this family are ecological opportunists, frequently occurring in disturbed environments such as agricultural fields, city parks and similar habitats. However, several species are closely associated with undisturbed habitats, such as montane climax forests, peat-bogs, wetlands or even steppes. No species of Hybotidae was formerly recordedfrom the Poľana PLA-BR; 83 species have been encountered in the area during recent faunal investigations, including 10 species representing new additions to the regional fauna raising so the number of species in Slovakia to 170.
