Original language description
The Empididae, as currently concieved, is undoubtedly a polyphyletic taxon of lower Brachycera. Therefore, provisionally, the concept of Chvála (2006) is used here, i.e. including Trichopeza and Iteaphila groups of genera but excluding Atelestidae. Thislarge family includes more than 800 species in Europe (Chvála 2007) and 261 species are currently known from the Slovak Republic (Chvála 2006) but this number is far from complete. Adult appearance is very diverse, ranging from very small forms (less than 2 mm) to large ones (over 11 mm in European species), with colour varying from yellow to black, cell dm usually present as well as an elongate, piercing proboscis. Adult feeding habits are also diverse, ranging from exclusively nectar feeding groups topredaceous forms. Some nectar feeding species are often predaceous only during mating activity. Adults occur in practically all terrestrial habitats, from lowlands to the highest altitudes in montane regions, and may be important pollina
