Comment on “Spatial distributions, potential sources, and ecological risks of heavy metals in stream sediments of Zambia” by Sun et al. (2025)
Original language description
In a recent publication, Sun et al. (2025) presented and discussed data about metals in the stream sediments of Zambia. Regardless of the problematic use of the term “heavy metals”, which should be replaced (note also that arsenic is not a metal, but a metalloid) (Pourret et al., 2021 and references therein), the methodology, the obtained data and their interpretation are highly problematic. To our surprise, most previous publications about the topic, for example Pettersson et al. (2000), Pettersson and Ingri (2001), Sracek et al. (2011), Sracek et al. (2012), Kříbek et al. (2010), Sracek et al. (2018), and Kříbek et al. (2023) were completely ignored. About 63 % of references in Sun et al. (2025) are from China, some of which are not accessible or have limited relevance for the article.
