Pretratment of Coir Fibers by Alkali Method Determined For Application in Area of Polymeric Composite Materials

  • Original language description

In industrial applications, there is a growing demand for natural materials to replace synthetic ones. Natural materials have certain limitations that must be considered. These include variable mechanical properties and the need for treatment before their application in composite materials. However, natural fibers have a potential that far outweighs their negatives. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of a 5% NaOH solution applied to natural coir fibers for 0 to 48 h on the break tenacity and surface texture of natural fibers evaluated by SEM analysis. These natural fibers are used in research for polymer resin-based composite materials produced by vacuum infusion. The experimental program verifies hypotheses coming from extensive available literature. The experimental part of the paper determines mechanical properties of untreated and alkali treated natural vegetable fibers e.g. coir. The alkalization of cellulose fibers coir was chosen for the experimental program because it is very
