    PERSONALITY UNDER FIRE: DOES HUNTING ACT AS AN ARTIFICIAL SELECTION ON WILD BOAR PERSONALITY?

    Animal personality, defined as consistent individual differences in behaviour across time and contexts, affects almost every aspect of an individual´s life, including fitness. Yet, how this behavioural variation is maintained in the population remains poorly understood as animal personality and its evolutionary mechanisms are challenging to study in wildlife. In this study, we examined (1) whether personality traits (i.e. activity, exploration and boldness) predict the survival of wild boar (Sus scrofa) and (2) whether different hunting methods (shooting from a high stand and drive hunts) selectively remove certain personality types from the population. To study personality, we used movement data from 108 GPS-tracked wild boars (mean ± SD tracking period: 167 ± 129 days) and computed movement rate as a proxy for activity, intensity of space use as a proxy for exploration and diurnality as a proxy for boldness. Using a variance partitioning approach, we tested the repeatability of these traits to quantify their individual variation, and we examined the correlations among traits to reveal a behavioural syndrome. Wild boar showed significant individual variation in all three measured traits, with repeatability ranging from 0.16 to 0.35. We observed significant correlations between the three traits, indicating the existence of a movement syndrome, with fast nocturnal boars moving linearly on one end of the syndrome and slow diurnal boars moving on a spot on the other end of the syndrome. The preliminary results suggest no effect of personality on survival and the minimal selectivity of hunting for personality traits, potentially explaining the global ecological success of wild boar.
