Consistent intraspecific variation in behaviour directly impacts fitness and reactions to environmental challenges, including life in human-altered landscapes. Yet, it is rarely considered in free-ranging species thriving in anthropogenic landscapes. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the inter-individual variability in movement traits of wild boar and highlight its potential for ecology and practical management. We utilised satellite telemetry data from 95 GPS-tracked wild boars monitored in the Czech Republic in two populations for several years. We computed weekly movement rate as a proxy for activity, intensity of space use as a proxy for exploration, and diurnality as a proxy for boldness. Employing a variance partitioning approach, we tested whether these traits were repeatable over time and, therefore, considered personality traits. We also examined the correlations among these traits, controlling for external (e.g., environmental characteristics, day length) and internal (e.g., sex and age) sources of variation. Wild boars exhibited significant consistent inter-individual variation in all three measured traits, with repeatability ranging from 0.16 to 0.35 depending on each trait’s ability to capture a specific behavioural dimension. Analysis of the covariance of the repeatable traits using Bayesian multivariate mixed-effect models revealed significant correlations between them, indicating the existence of a remarkable movement syndrome. Individuals with a tendency to stay within familiar areas were less nocturnal and moving slower, as opposed to individuals that roamed more outside familiar areas, faster and with striking nocturnality. Rather than distinct clusters, individuals were evenly distributed along a syndrome continuum, highlighting significant inter- individual variability potentially conferring remarkable population resilience to perturbations. The movement syndrome and its variability, with individuals spanning between extremes of movement and exploration, may underpin the species’ success in human-dominated landscapes while maximising resource acquisition. Integrating intraspecific behavioural variation into ecology and practical population management could improve population management strategies.
