    Animal personality has been studied in many solitary and socially living taxa. Still, little is known about the effect of conspecifics on the expressions of personality, for instance whether shyer individuals become bolder with conspecifics around and whether group members exhibit similarity in personality. There is also a surprising lack of studies assessing personality in the same animals in both individual and social settings. Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) are callitrichid primates native to Brazil, that spend their lives in family groups, yet also often face problems on their own. It was shown that marmosets display personality both in captive and wild settings; however, whether and how their personality profiles are affected by the presence of conspecifics is still unknown. In this study, we aimed to answer this question by replicating a personality test battery previously done in an individual setting. Namely, we tested 25 captive common marmosets in a social setting across five tests in two test sessions, assessing their general activity, as well as their reactions to novel object, food, and predator model, and their foraging under risk. We found that many behavioural variables showed a high degree of both temporal and contextual repeatability across sessions and tests, and that the resulting personality structure as obtained by a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was strikingly similar to previously obtained structure from wild monkeys tested in a social setting. When examining exactly the same temporally repeatable behavioural variables across individual and social settings, the resulting personality structure consisted of two principal components: Boldness/Exploration and Stress/Activity. Interestingly, while Boldness/Exploration was significantly correlated across individual and social settings, Stress/Activity was not and seems to have been modified by the presence of group members: those individuals that were more stressed/active in the individual setting became less stress/active when tested with conspecifics, and vice versa. We will discuss what these findings of plasticity in marmoset personality across settings could signify, i.e., if and to which extent social environment affects the flexibility in expression of individual personality traits. Furthermore, we will discuss the implication of these results on the future of empirical test designs and welfare choices of captive animals.
