Valuable Tree Species in Forest Stands of the Czech Republic ? Black Cherry

  • Original language description

Low attention is paid to introduced tree species in the Czech Republic currently. In some cases the introduced species are even regarded as undesirable. It should not be forgotten that these species are often a source of valuable wood. Black Cherry (Padus serotina (Ehrh.) Borkh.) is one of such tree species. In countries of its native distribution Black Cherry ranks, thanks to appearance of the wood and its excellent properties, among important commercial species. This article focuses on the wood of Black Cherry from the Czech territory, above all on its properties. Basic mechanical and physical properties of Blackcherry wood were tested and compared to data from the native territories and to the wood properties of Czech native species.
