Screening of Withania somnifera (L.)Dunal for antibacterial activity
Original language description
Roots were extracted with ethanol and the resultant extract was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and the yeast Candida albicans. The extract showed inhibitory activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus). Lower activity was shown against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). No significant inhibition was observed for C. albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined for the most sensitive bacteria B. cereus, MIC50 = 39.5%, MIC80 = 48%.
