Original language description
Twenty-four strains of bifidobacteria and 21 strains of lactic acid bacteria were examined for the presence of fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase, alpha-galactosidase, and alpha-glucosidase and the resistance to metronidazole and mupirocin. Bifidobacteria strains tested were mupirocin-resistant, lactic acid bacteria strains were susceptible. Hence, the resistance to mupirocin may serve as a simple criterion distinguishing Bifidobacterium spp. from other lactic acid bacteria. A selective medium containing mupirocin (100 mg/l) was developed for the isolation and enumeration of bifidobacteria in fermented dairy products. This medium can be also applied as a selective medium for bifidobacteria in probiotics that contain mixed population of lactic acidbacteria and bifidobacteria. MR, B, BS2 and MTPY agars were selective for Bifidobacterium sp. from human and rabbit faecal and caecal samples.
