The nature of imitation in the 19th century historicism arises more clearly if we understand the change, which occurred in the European thinking at the turn of the 18th century. At that time historical consciousness emerged and timeless “Order” was replaced by “History”. It is necessary to have cognisance of key moments in the development of architectural discourse from the 17th to the 19th century, which were very important for the change from classic order into historicist style, if we want to follow on what theoretical foundations this style represents a certain meaning. This is the only way to understand how from the essential components of an order could arise autonomous decorative part of building perceived by contemporaries as the peel or wear. And what considerations caused that architecture could bear individual character. We will find out that historicism of the 19th century has its nature much closer to modernism of the following age than to the previous period and that the historicist style “peel” has much less common with imitation than with our own identity
