Novel liquid crystals based on [1]benzothieno[3,2 b][1]benzothiophene
Original language description
Four series of new [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene derivatives have been synthesised. In the non-chiral series SmA phase occurs, while the chiral series exhibits rather wide antiferroelectric SmCA phase just below the SmA phase. The clearing pointis significantly increased when the carbonyl linkage group is used between the heterocyclic core and the alkyl chain. The SmA - SmCA phase transition is studied by DSC and by dielectric spectroscopy, which yields the type of the transition. In the SmCA phase the spontaneous quantities have been measured. The tilt angle shows typical temperature dependence for the phase transition parameter, the values of spontaneous polarisation are rather moderate. The length of the helical pitch increases with increasing length of the non-chiral alkyl chain.
