Electrocatalytic properties of mixed Pt-polypyrrole catalyst for the anodic methanol oxidation
Original language description
The direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is attractive as a power source due to its simple system design, low operation temperature, and convenient fuel storage and supply. However, inherent limitations of the DMFC are related to the relatively low power density, which is connected with the poor kinetics of the anode reaction and poisoning of the catalyst by reaction intermediates and the methanol cross-over. To overcome these drawbacks, research efforts have to address the improvement of the anodic catalyst structure and the ion-exchanger membrane. We have investigated the formation and electrocatalytic properties of new catalyst structures for the anode reaction consisting of the composite of the conducting polymer polypyrrole (PPy) as support and nanosized Pt, Pt-Ru particles as catalyst. Enhanced catalytic activity for the methanol oxidation was found compared with standard Pt/C catalyst systems and the dependence of the catalytic activity on the distribution and size of the catalyst pa
