Original language description
The direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is attractive as a power source because of its simple system design, low operating temperature, and convenient fuel supply and storage. However, its performance still reveals limitations related to the relatively lowpower density, which is mainly due to the poor kinetics of the anode reaction, the poisoning of the catalyst by reaction intermediates and the methanol cross-over. To overcome these drawbacks, research efforts have to address the optimisation of the composition and structure of the anode catalyst layer and the properties of the cation exchanger membrane. We have investigated a new catalyst system for the anode side of the DMFC, consisting of Pt, Pt-Ru nanosize particles embedded into the conducting polymer polypyrrole (PPy) as the catalyst support, providing mixed electron and ion conductivity.
