Poster: Porosity and pore size control in starch consolidation casting - topological aspects

  • Original language description

This work explores the possibilities of porosity and pore size control in the SCC process (starch consolidation casting) and is intended to contribute to a realistic assessment of the future potential and limitations of the process. Three commercially available starch types (potato, wheat and corn starch) are used, characterized by a different granule size (ranging from approx. 14 m for corn and approx. 49 m for potato starch) and swelling behavior. The ceramic bodies (aluminia) resulting after thermaltreatment (drying, starch burnout and firing at 1570°C) are characterized with the respect to shrinkage, porosity and pore size. It is shown that porosity control is difficult, especially when the starch contents are small (< 10 vol %). On the other hand, pore size can be efficiently controlled by choosing the appropriate starch type. Topological aspects are discussed and the subtle interplay between porosity, pore size and pore connectivity is elucidated.
