    Synthesis and phase transition behaviour of novel polymerizable bent-shaped mesogens.

    Liquid crystals due to their unique properties are subject of considerable interest. Recently achiral bent-shaped liquid crystals were introduced. Of particular practical significance are polymeric liquid crystals or liquid-crystalline polymers. Polymersfrom banana monomers could combine the unique properties of polymers with those peculiar to banana molecules giving rise to chiral phases without the existence of chiral centres in the constituent molecules. Recently we studied synthetic procedures andmesomorphic behaviour of series of Schiff bases and ester of bent-shaped liquid crystals based on laterally substitued naphthalene unit in the core.Herein we present a series of symmetrical and nonsymmetrical 1-substitued naphthalene-2,7-diol based materials possessing a polymerizable group at the end of the terminal alkyl chain. Mesomorphic properties of new materials were identified using DSC studies, texture observation, and electro-optical measurements. Depending on the chain length
