During the last decade concerted effort was devoted to recognition of relation between structure-and properties of bent-shaped liquid crystalline phases. Recently we found that mesomorphic behaviour of liquid crystals based on laterally substituted naphtalene-2,7-diole strongly depend on the character of the substituent. Up to now, only few reports concerning banana liquid crystals with a nonsymmetrical core have been shown. Herein we report synthesis and properties of new series of nonsymmetrical liquid crystals based on (8-lateraly substituted) 7-hydroxynaphtalene-2-carboxylic acid. The phase transition temperatures and values of enthalpies were determined from DSC measurements. The phases were characterized by texture observation and electro-opticalstudies. In the frequency range 10Hz - 10MHz dielectric spectroscopy has been performed to characterize studied phases.
