Electrochemical preparation of gas diffusion electrodes for PEMFC

  • Original language description

The electrochemical way of preparation of gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) for the fuel cell with polymer electrolyte membrane (PEMFC) was studied. Two concepts of preparation were examined; the first one consisted in electrodeposition of platinum metal onto gas diffusion layer (GDL) and subsequent incorporation of Nafion? by means of spraying. The second way differed just by the order of above mentioned steps: GDL was treated by Nafion? prior to platinum electrodeposition. Nafion? was incorporated to thestructure of catalyst layer in order to increase the number of catalyst particles with three-phase contact and so to intensify the utilisation of the catalyst. The amount of Nafion? loading varied from 0 to 1 mg/cm2 in both cases. Such prepared electrodes were tested as anodes in a laboratory O2/H2 PEMFC. The Nafion? loading up to 0.6 mg/cm2 had a positive effect on the fuel cell performance in both concepts of preparation, however the second concept has proven to be more attractive bec
