Influence of Na2O/K2O ratio on in vitro properties of bioactive glass
Original language description
This work deals with the influence of alkali oxide (Na2O and K2O) content on in vitro bioactivity of glasses. Potassium oxide has been used to adjust the hot working range of bioactive glasses. In vitro behaviour of three glasses in the system Na2O-K2O-CaO-P2O5-SiO2 was studied in simulated body fluid (SBF). SBF is an in vitro testing solution with ion concentration similar to the inorganic part of human blood plasma. Molar composition of the glasses differed only in the content of the alkali oxides sothat the sum of Na2O and K2O was constant. Glass samples in the shape of plates were exposed to the test solution in static environment at 37?C up to 7 days. The SA/V ratio (sample surface area to solution volume) was approximately 0.4 cm-1. Changes dueto glass dissolution and/or calcium phosphate precipitation in the pH values and in the ion concentration (ICP-AES) of the solution as well as changes in sample weight were measured as a function of the immersion time. Furthermore, change
