Treatment of the intert materials surfaces causing their bioactivity
Original language description
Zirconia ceramics (t-ZrO2 stabilized by Y2O3) belongs to category of inert biomaterials (tolerated by live body, forming no permanent connections to live tissues) used in implantology mostly for reconstruction mechanically stressed parts. The aim of thisstudy was to prepare potentially bioactive layer on the ZrO2 substrate by method called precalcification, successfully applied on Ti and Ti alloys before. In this study pre-treated zirconia samples - mechanically, chemically (Al2O3 blasting following bytreating with HF or NaOH) were compared with commercially prepared titanium substrate - Ti-Bio as standard sample. Mechanical treatment increased roughness of the ZrO2 surface and moreover, subsequent exposition in NaOH increased surface bioactivity. From gravimetric data and surface analysis it seems that the precalcification method could be used also for ZrO2 ceramics.
