Deposition by sol-gel and characterisation of antibacterial bioactive layer on a Ti substrate
Original language description
The aim of this study was to prepare the bioactive and antibacterial layer on the titanium surface. The theoretical understanding of the interaction between glass surfaces and body fluids were used to develop the procedure to produce the layer. For bioactivation of the originally bioinert titanium surface, a SiO2 gel layer was prepared by dip-coating using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). To enhance the nucleating role of this gel layer, calcium and phosphate ions were incorporated into the gel layer bydifferent methods. The first one, based on mixing the SiO2 colloidal solution with solutions containing dissolved Ca2+ and PO4 3?, resulted in layers with poor adhesion to the Ti substrate. More promising was the second method, when calcium and phosphateions were incorporated into the layer in the form of previously prepared brushite or monetite crystals. The layers with good adhesion (measured using ASTM D3359-02) and bioactivity (tested in vitro by interaction with simulated body flui
