Study on extraction efficiency of zinc from alkaline and zinc-chloride batteries
Original language description
Waste alkaline and zinc-chloride Zn/MnO2 batteries were separately dismantled and subjected to magnetic, grinding and grain size separations. The undersize fraction -10 mm contained 21 % Zn and 33 % Mn obtained from alkaline batteries and 20 % Zn and 25% Mn obtained from zinc-chloride batteries. Zinc and manganese obtained from alkaline batteries and 20 % Zn and 25 % Mn obtained from zinc-chloride batteries. Zinc and manganese extractions were studied during leach experiments performed with different size fractions obtained from both undersize fractions -10 mm. At first the individual size fractions were leached in water to remove most alkaline metals chlorides. Obtained insoluble residues were leached in 15 % H2SO4 to establish kinetics of zinc and manganese extraction. It was found that depending on the size fraction of processed electrode materials 94-99 % Zn and 19-26 % Mn was extracted from alkaline Zn/MnO2 batteries and 80-97 % Zn and 25-36 % Mn from zinc-chloride Zn/MnO2 batter
