Characterization of glaze defects of historical glazed tiles
Original language description
Many types of glaze defects can be seen on historical ceramic objects, which arise due to different causes such as inappropriate firing conditions or incompatibility of glaze and ceramic body features. Coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of ceramic bodies were measured by dilatometer and coefficients of thermal expansion of historical glazes were calculated from chemical compositions. It was found that defects observed in the sample of Roman tile were caused by mechanical stress during its usage. Onthe contrary the defects observed in samples of Gothic tiles were caused by incompatibility of glazes and ceramic bodies features and thus due to the development of undesirable stresses within the glaze.
