Corrosion of an archaeological potassium glass.

  • Original language description

Archaeological glasses, deposited in refuse pits of medieval houses, are significantly corroded. We observed and analysed various glass corrosion examples by optical microscopy (OM) and electron microscopy (SEM/EDS). Massive leaching of alkalis was detected in medieval glasses with low content of SiO2 (resulting in a brown or black crust on the glass surface). Iridescence (demonstrating the small extent of corrosion) appears on the glasses from the Renaissance period thanks to their better chemical durability compared to the Gothic glass. We also found pitting (Gothic and Renaissance glass), and a variety of corrosion forms on the Baroque glass surface (iridescence, dulling and/or crizzling). An increase of the SiO2 content in glass causes the significant increase of the glass chemical durability.
