Surface properties of clay sorbents for decontamination of water polluted by arsenic
Original language description
Arsenic is of an increasing environmental attention due to their significance to human health. The use of clay materials as selective sorbents of different contaminants belongs to very effective decontamination methods. This paper describes the effect of different temperatures on the rehydration process, surface and physical properties of a kaolinite-based rehydrated metakaolinite. The rehydration of metakaolinite were studied from 150 to 250oC under autogenous pressures. A natural kaolinite was calcined to metakaolinite and than rehydrated at different temperature to a highly porous kaolinite. To improve sorption properties to anionic particles, prepared kaolinite was treated by rehydration in autoclave with Fe2+ ions. The rehydrated kaolinites were used for the adsorption of arsenic oxyanions and the adsorption efficiency were investigated.
