CATALYTIC AND THERMAL CLEAVAGE OF ? -PINENE OXIDE AND MYRTENOL

  • Original language description

?-Pinene oxide (BPO) can be cleaved using acidic and basic catalysts. The main products of BPO cleavage in acid catalysis are myrtenol, perillyl and isoperillyl alcohol. For catalytic cleavage of BPO several heterogeneous acidic catalysts as Solidstrong acid (SSA), SPA catalyst? and zeolites were used. Their properties were influenced by thermal treatment at 450 °C such as calcination under nitrogen atmosphere or in the presence of water gas. When using all the catalyst based on aluminosilicates both perillyl alcohol and myrtenol originated. The highest selectivity to perillyl alcohol were achieved using zeolite HY. Thermal cleavage of myrtenol; myrtanol and mixtures with perillyl alcohol and Mayol were carried out using the micro-reactor unit, attached on-line to a gas chromatograph with mass detector. Reaction was carried out in the temperature range from 300 to 480 °C. During thermal cleavage of myrtenol, myrtanol or mixtures of these compounds with perillyl alcohol or Mayol at temperatures higher than 400 °C undesirable products such as ?-pinene, limonene and menthenes are generated. Dehydration of alcohols occurs and is preferred reaction.
