PERFLUORINATED SULPHONATED ACIDS AS A POLYMER ELECTROLYTE AND ELECTRODE COMPARTMENTS SEPARATOR IN PEM WATER ELECTROLYSIS

  • Original language description

Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) water electrolysis represents one of the key components of the hydrogen economy concept. Its main role consists in conversion of an excessive electrical energy produced by the renewable energy sources into the chemical energy of hydrogen. One way of increasing the process intensity is increasing in the cell operational temperature enhancing at the same time electrode reactions kinetics, as well as the PEM conductivity. So far, however, only minimum information is available on the behavior of the PFSA under such conditions. The danger of undesired changes in the material performance is mainly related to the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the material being close to the 100 °C (alpha relaxation). If the Tg is exceeded, internal structure may change with undesired impact on the material properties. The contribution will report on the results of experimental characterization of the Nafion?117 as a typical representative of the PFSA materials during and after exposure to the conditions relevant for PEM water electrolysis at the elevated temperature (up to 150 °C) and pressure (up to 0.7 MPa), including cell with asymmetric pressure, i.e. so called electrochemical compressor.
