PHENYLACETYLENE AS AN ACID CATALYST FOR ORGANIC REACTIONS
Original language description
The possible use of phenylacetylene as an acid catalyst was described in this paper. Two types of reactions were chosen for testing of the catalytic activity of this compound, acetalization and acylation. Acetalization of aromatic aldehydes proceeded without catalyst addition in comparison to aliphatic aldehydes and ketones, where the conversion was not higher than 10%. In dependence on catalyst addition the reaction rate in the case of acetalization of aliphatic aldehydes increased and the achieved yields were higher than 40% after 24 hours. The acetalization of ketones did not take place. Acylation of syringaldehyde or ethylvanilin did not result in formation of 1,1-diacetate, due to the preference of esterification. Phenylacetylene can be simply separated from reaction mixture by distillation.
