Application of wheat straw ash in production of alkali-activated construction composites

  • Original language description

We focused at the presented study at the valorization of biomass ash as filler in the design and development of new eco-efficient alkali-activated geopolymers. Since coal fly ash is one of the main precursors used for alkali-activated geopolymer production, this research examines the use of biomass ash, which can have comparable chemical composition and physical properties to coal fly ash, and thus can be potentially geopolymerized in the same way. In this study, the wheat straw ash is used together with diatomaceous earth to produce new type of materials for construction use. First, chemical and physical analysis of wheat straw ash and diatomite is done. A wide set of basic physical, mechanical, and hygric properties of the developed geopolymer is determined, and its assessment is made using a comparison with reference data. The obtained material exhibits sufficient mechanical resistance and improved hygric properties that affect its durability in a possible contact with water. The geopolymer produced was found to be promising alternative to cement-based products, taking into consideration the reduction of energy for clinkering, CO2 emission and mining of raw materials for PC production.
