  • Original language description

    Foaming with wheat flour is a new processing technique for the preparation of porous ceramics. This contribution presents rheological studies of hydroxyapatite (HA) suspensions and describes the preparation of highly porous HA ceramics using this new technique. Suspensions with 30, 35 and 40 wt.% HA and different types and amounts of deflocculants have been prepared and quantitatively characterized via rotational viscometry. Further rheological studies have been performed for optimized suspensions with 35 wt.% HA and 0.7 wt.% polyelectrolyte solution (Dolapix CE64), to which 10 and 30 vol.% of corn starch or 20 vol.% of wheat flour, have been added. After foaming of the wheat-flour-containing suspensions via mechanical agitation, highly porous HA ceramics are obtained with 82-83 % porosity after firing at 850 °C. Microscopic image analysis and mercury intrusion porosimetry are used to characterize the hierarchical microstructure of HA ceramics with its partially sintered matrix.
