Hydrotalcite-like compounds for aldol condensation of cyclopentanone and valeraldehyde
Original language description
Aldol condensation is an important and useful reaction in C-C bond formation. It is commonly catalysed by NaOH, KOH etc. solutions. Using homogeneous catalysts in this process brings some negative aspects1. Developing a new active heterogeneous base catalyst, such as hydrotalcite-like materials (HT)2, can simplify it in comparison with traditional homogeneous catalysts. 2 Pentylidenecyclopentanone (Fig.1, III) can be obtained by aldol condensation of cyclopentanone (I) and valeraldehyde (II). This compound can be subsequently hydrogenated to a fragrance 2 pentylcyclopentan-1-one (IV), commercially also known as Delphone (Firmenich). This work focuses on the possible utilization of unmodified Mg/Al hydrotalcite-like compounds and also HT modified by palladium, which could serve as a hydrogenation component, in this fragrance synthesis. The activity of prepared catalysts by coprecipitation method with different Mg:Al molar ratios and HT modified by Pd by impregnation method has been studied in aldol condensation of cyclopentanone and valeraldehyde. Reaction conditions were optimized in order to improve selectivity to 2 pentylidenecyclopentanone (reactants ratio, the method of the catalyst activation (calcination or rehydration), the reaction temperature and the catalyst amount).
