ECOTOXICITY OF MIDDLE PETROLEUM DISTILLATES AND BIODIESEL
Original language description
Crude oil and oil products are very complex mixtures of compounds and thus it is difficult to evaluate their toxicity based on their composition. Therefore, ecotoxicological tests are usually implemented on living organisms using whole petroleum fractions. These substances may have several negative effects on the organisms: they can affect the physical changes (suffocation, preventing access of light), they can change the parameters of the place where organisms live (change of pH, reduction of oxygen concentration, deterioration of the availability of food) and they are toxic. Aromatic fractions, included in petroleum and oil products, have the greatest toxic effect. Moreover, the greatest risk of petroleum hydrocarbons is their ability to concentrate and accumulate in organisms. The aim of this work was to determine terrestrial ecotoxicity of middle petroleum distillates and biodiesel. Petroleum distillates are represented by mineral diesel without additives and by light cycle oil, which is used in diesel production. Light cycle oil contains more bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbons than diesel. Biodiesel contains fatty acids methyl esters and was chosen due to assumption of the lowest toxicity on living organisms. This paper is focused on tests of toxicity of compounds mentioned above on two organisms - enchytraeids (Enchytraeus crypticus) and springtails (Folsomia candida). The advantage of these organisms is their easy breeding. Results showed that petroleum distillates and biodiesel are toxic in different concentration ranges for these organisms. Achieved results might be helpful with evaluating the impact of their spills or accidents.
