Biological removal of polychlorinated biphenyls-benefits of mutual co-operation of plants and bacteria
Original language description
Three different sites contaminated with PCBs in the Czech Republic were analysed to determine their PCB content, the microbial count (total counts) and presence of vegetation Concentration of PCBs in all samples collected in the contaminated sites variedfrom 0 - 450 ppm of PCBs. All sites were vegetated with different plant species including different types of grasses and trees Number of micro-organisms is not dependent on PCB concentration but it varied in bulk and vegetated soil. Samples collected from bulk soil contained even 10-100 times less microorganisms than samples from vegetated sites. Microbial consortia isolated from contaminated soil were able to degrade PCBs under laboratory conditions in the presence of biphenyl.
