Biological detoxification of coffee husk by Rhizopus sp. by solid state fermentation using a column bioreactor

  • Original language description

Most of the fungi that are able to degrade caffeine and tannin belong to the Penicillium and Aspergillus genera. Biotechnological detoxification of coffee husk by a grass fungi have a great potential for animal feed application. Solid state fermentationwas carried out by Rhizopus sp. to improve the nutrition quality of coffee husk, due to the degradation of anti-nutricional and anti-physiological compounds. Optimization of bioprocess parameters were conducted using factorial design and surface res ponse. The best detoxification levels in erlenmeyer flasks (86% of caffeine and 58% of tannin decrease) were obtained with 75% moisture, at pH 6,5 and 28 °C after 7 days. The inoculum concentration did not affect the metabolization of toxic compounds by the fungal culture. The initial moisture content was the most important factor on the detoxification for both compounds. In order to study the effect of aeration in detoxification, the solid state fermentation was conducted in a column bioreac
