    Mineralization and Uptake of TNT by Microorganisms: Effect of Pretreatment with Alkali

    Four bacterial strains (Burkholderia cepacia SH-1, Pseudomonas aeruginosa SH-2, Pseudomonas putida MC-I, and Pseudomonas sp. X. Burkholderia cepacia SH-1) capable of growing on nitrotoluenes were incubated in basal salt medium containing either 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) or its alkali hydrolysate as carbon sources. They was able to grow in medium containing TNT as the sole carbon source and it transformed approximately 80% TNT into metabolic products within six days. Addition of glucose or succinate improved both the growth of cells and TNT uptake. In addition, experiments with distribution of radioactivity (biomass, solution and CO2) using uniformly labeled 14C-TNT were carried out.

    Čtyři bakteriální kmeny (Burkholderia cepacia SH-1, Pseudomonas aeruginosa SH-2, Pseudomonas putida MC-I, and Pseudomonas sp. X. Burkholderia cepacia SH-1) schopné růst na nitrotoluenech byly kultivovány v základním minerálním médiu obsahujícím buď 2,4,6-trinitrotoluen (TNT) nebo jeho alkalický hydrolyzát jako zdroj uhlíku. Byly schopné růst na médiu s TNT a přeměňovat ho na metabolity za 6 dní z 80 %. Přidáním glukózy nebo sukcinátu se zvýšila účinnost odbourávání TNT. Byly také provedeny experimenty se značeným 14C-TNT pro zjištění osudu uhlíku z odbouraného TNT (biomasa, roztok, CO2).
