Case study: Contamination of terrestric environment by industrial fire

Industrial fires together with some extinguishing techniques can cause significant pollution of the environment with a range of toxic compounds. Some of them are classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Aim of this case study is to evaluate the impact of the warehouse fire near Liberec on the environment, focusing on the pollution by POPs released during the fire. The amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS), brominated flame retardants (BFR) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) was determined in ash, soil and fallen leaves samples collected in the fire site and its surroundings. To determine large number of analytes with different physico-chemical properties use of various analytical techniques was required.
