Comparison of Suspended and Surface-immobilized Clostridium pasteurianum Cultures Performance during Continuous Butanol Production

  • Original language description

Butanol is a chemical with a wide spectrum of use in different fields of chemical industry. So-called solventogenic Clostridium bacteria (e.g. Clostridium acetobutylicum, Clostridium beijerinckii) produce butanol by the heterofermentative metabolic pathway originating in glycolysis, which is called acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation. Glycerol, an inevitable by-product generated during biodiesel production, can also be used for butanol production in case of C. pasteurianum. A continuous way of production is a preferable type of a process for any industrial scale biotechnology because it results in the reduction of non-operation times, which increases process productivity. While continuous fermentation with suspended cells did not result in reaching a steady state and its overall performance was poor especially with regard to butanol productivity (0.1 g/l/h), immobilization on the surface of corn cob pieces in a packed-bed column bioreactor resulted in butanol productivity 4.2 g/l/h using the dilution rate of 0.44 h-1.
