Excitability in chemical and biochemical pH-autocatalytic systems

  • Original language description

Using two different kinds of pH systems-the papain catalyzed hydrolysis of N-benzoyl-L-arginine ethyl ester in membrane reactor and the bromate-sulfite-ferrocyanide (BSF) reaction on the CSTR - we study the relation among excitability, oscillations and bistability, and the ability of the system to respond to external periodic perturbations. A precise definition and a method of calculating the threshold set are formulated. Two kind of excitability distinguished by either direct or indirect initiation ofthe activatory process are found in both pH systems
