The reaction of hydrogen peroxide, thiosulfate and sulphuric acid catalyzed by cupric ions (HPTCu reaction1) displays a rich nonlinear behaviour marked by multiple steady states, excitability and oscillations in a continuous-flow stirred tank reactor (CSTR) operated under isothermal conditions. The HPTCu reaction is a so called pH oscillator because the oscillations observed during experiments exhibit large changes in pH value, typically in the range of pH between 4 and 6. The reaction displays not onlysimple oscillations but also complex oscillations. It has been observed in earlier work that a large peak may be followed by a series of small-amplitudes oscillations and that the length of the phase of small oscillations may vary in a regular or irregular fashion. However, these measurements have not been made with the aim of systematic study of the transitions between various regular and irregular dynamical regimes.
