HYDROGEN AND OXYGEN PROBE FOR MEASUREMENT OF MASS TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS BY A DYNAMIC METHOD
Original language description
Gas-liquid contacting is an important area of research in chemical engineering. Measurement of large mass transfer coefficients requires that the response of the analytical device is faster than the rate constant of the process. Characteristics of a polarographic oxygen and a hydrogen probe are presented. These probes have a sufficiently fast rate of response for use with dynamic methods for mass transfer rate measurement. The performance of the oxygen probe in gas-liquid dispersion was shown by makingmeasurements in an agitated tank. Mass transfer rates across a calm liquid surface were made using hydrogen and oxygen. The exponential dependence of the mass transfer coefficient on the gas diffusivity was shown to be 0.56, which supports the idea thatin pure liquids, the surface is mobile.
